Headaches

So, I’ve been having these killer headaches lately. For nearly four weeks solid I was taking Tylenol at least once a day. I don’t particularly like taking medicine like that. Finally I had enough, and decided to go see someone for it. Frankly, I’m kind of tired of Western Medicine and decided I wanted to go see a Naturopathic Doctor. I have heard so many wonderful things about Dr. Luper, so I called up my insurance company to see what they covered for naturo. They don’t cover it very well. But it was enough that Mike and I decided I could go in for these headaches.

So, last Tuesday I went in. Now, back up a second here… Logan has been having problems with nursing lately. He will pull off in the middle of eating and squirm and cry, which are obvious signals that his belly is bothering him. When he was only a few weeks old I went off of dairy because he was having mucous and blood in his stools. Going off the dairy cleared that up almost right away and I have been off of it ever since. It didn’t clear up his fussiness though. So right before I went to my appointment with Dr. Luper I had an appointment with my Lactation Consultant. The week before, she had me go off of wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts, and corn to see if it helped him any. I hadn’t noticed any major change, and she’s kind of stumped as to what to do next. So I leave her office with the plan to continue off of the wheat – corn for another week, and if I still saw no improvement to slowly reintroduce those foods and see if he had any negative reactions.

So back to my appointment with Dr. Luper. I went in and sat and talked with him for an hour. We went over my headaches, and through a series of questions he came to the conclusion that my headaches are caused by tension in my shoulders. I have huge knots in them that I have have for a couple of years. I used to get them worked out once a month by a massage therapist at a chiropractor’s office, when I had my own insurance and they covered 80% of it. Then I switched over to Mike’s insurance when we got married and now they only cover 50%, so I can’t go in as often. Anyways, Dr. Luper recommended that I have acupuncture done, and massage to help with the tension, and get rid of my headaches. My first acupuncture appointment is next Saturday, then the following Monday I have a massage scheduled. I’m so excited!

Now, for the part about Logan. As we were going over some of my history, the fact that I have had five UTI’s in the last 18 months came up. Through some more questions he started to suspect that something is going on in my gut because of all the antibiotics I’ve been on in the last 18 months. I also told him about Logan’s nursing issues. Well, after a quick abdominal exam he was fairly certain that I’ve got a lot of bad bacteria floating around in my gut, causing problems, because the antibiotics have killed off all the good bacteria, and can no longer fight anything off. So, he’s having me do a few tests, then when the results come back from that, we will work on treating the issue. Until then I’m on probiotics. But the best part about the whole appointment was that he said that he thinks if we can get my gut fixed, then we might get Logan’s issues fixed as well! I am SO excited about this possibility. It hasn’t been TOO bad, but it gets frustrating at times, and I feel bad that the poor baby can’t just eat his meal in peace without having to cry. It will be such a blessing if we can get this cleared up.

And it would just be a bonus if I could have my dairy back. :o)
